Firemaking turns logs into fires, and a lit fire is a cooking spot: use raw food on it and it cooks. It also opens the hot air balloon network, once The Grand Tree is behind you. The other half of the skill is the incinerator, which bakes logs down into ashes, and those ashes combine with bones for a large amount of Prayer experience.

How you train it

Level 1 to 120

There is no tinderbox: hold a log and use it on the ground. Burn the best log you have the level for, because XP per log climbs steeply and the burn is one action either way. Then decide how you want to play it. Lighting fresh fires pays full XP but wants a click every couple of seconds, while standing on a lit fire feeds it from your pack on its own for a tenth less XP a log.

  1. Oak logs 1 to 10

Nine XP a log, and the fire burns for about ten seconds. The lumber shop at the Lumber Yard keeps oak in stock by the hundred, so you can buy this band outright.

  2. Palm logs 10 to 25

Twenty XP a log, and palms are quick to cut for yourself. This is a long band on one log type and palm is not sold anywhere, so bank a few hundred before you start.

  3. Willow and spruce logs 25 to 35

Willow 34 XP, spruce 42 at level 30. Both are sold at the lumber shop as well as cut, so this band is easy to supply without touching a hatchet.

  4. Teak and maple logs 35 to 50

Teak 47 XP, maple 56 at level 40. Maple carries you all the way to 50 and is the last log the lumber shop stocks.

  5. Pine, yew and sequoia logs 50 to 70

Pine 72 XP, yew 87 at 55, sequoia 104 at 60. From here on you are burning what you cut, so pair the session with Woodcutting rather than banking trips.

  6. Magic and baobab logs 70 to 85

Magic logs give 136 XP and baobab 190 at level 80. Baobabs almost never fall when chopped, which makes them the easier of the two to keep supplied.

  7. Elder then sakura logs 85 to 120

Elder 250 XP, sakura 300 at level 90. These are the only two worth burning at the top end, and they also hold a flame the longest, a little over half a minute each.

Bonfires

Light a fire, then stay on the spot without sneaking and without lighting another one. A couple of seconds later the fire starts pulling logs out of your pack by itself, one every two seconds, and keeps going until you step away or run out.

Each log fed this way pays a tenth less XP than lighting it by hand, and the log rate is the same either way, so the trade is a little XP for not clicking.

The incinerator

The Mausoleum in Morytania has one. Feed it logs and it returns ashes of that wood plus a quarter of the log's normal Firemaking XP.

Then put ashes and bones in together for Prayer XP. Better wood makes the bones worth more, and one lot of ashes covers nine bones.

Hot air balloons

Finish The Grand Tree and reach Firemaking 20 to fly. The first trip to a destination costs ten logs of that route's type, oak for the early stops, then willow, yew and magic further out. Once a route is unlocked it costs a single log.

Routes are opened by flying out from Entrana, and each new one past the first pair pays 2,000 Firemaking XP the first time you land. You steer the balloon around obstacles on the way, and hitting one crashes you back to Entrana with a wound.

Worth knowing

  • A fire needs a solid block underneath and open air above. Water and lava will not take a log.
  • Every fire drops ashes on the ground when it finally burns out.
  • The Firemaking cape makes fires last half again as long, which is worth having when you are using one as a cooking spot.
  • Daily jobs regularly ask for a stack of a specific log burnt, and pay coins and Exploration XP on top of the burn itself. Logs fed to a bonfire count towards them.
