Cosmetics and Transmogs

122 cosmetic items plus a transmog system that reskins gear without changing its stats.

122 cosmetic items

Your gear decides how you fight. Cosmetics decide how you look while you do it. CraftScape keeps the two apart: a transmog copies the appearance of one item onto another you already own, and the wardrobe stacks skins, pets, titles and trails on top of that. None of it changes a combat stat.

What a transmog actually changes

A transmog copies the appearance of one item onto another. That is all it does. The item underneath keeps its stats and its level requirement, and behaves in combat exactly as it did before. A rune platebody wearing the look of a bronze one still defends like rune. A transmog is never an upgrade, never a downgrade, and never a way to sneak a stat past anybody.

The game is deliberately honest about it. A transmogged item's name picks up a Transmogged tag, and its description says so and points the reader at Reyny to have it removed, so anyone inspecting it knows what they are looking at. Drop it on the floor and the disguise falls away, so the item lying on the ground is always the true item. Step into a PvP area or walk up to the wilderness wall and every transmog you are carrying reverts on the spot.

Applying one at Reyny

Reyny handles both transmogs and cosmetic overrides, and stands in around twenty spots spread across the towns. Put the item you want to re-skin in your main hand and talk to her, or type /transmog. The menu shows your held item, then an empty appearance slot, then a preview of the result. Click any item in your inventory to drop it into that slot and the preview updates immediately.

Paying is a choice of two. It costs 250 orbs, or a single transmog token instead. Either way the donated item is consumed. Transmogs are stored against the item type rather than the single copy, so once you have dressed one rune helm, every rune helm you pick up afterwards wears the same look without paying again.

Removing one costs nothing. Hold the transmogged item, talk to Reyny again and take the remove option, and your donor item is handed straight back with everything it came in with. You have to do this before applying a different look, because an item only ever carries one transmog at a time.

The rules on what can copy what

Like copies like. Melee weapons, bows, magic wands and staves, shields, helmets, chestplates, leggings, boots, pickaxes, hatchets, spades and fishing tools each match only themselves. A shield cannot become a sword. Anything outside those categories cannot be transmogged at all, and Reyny will simply refuse the pairing rather than take your orbs for it.

The second rule is the one that keeps the system honest: the donor's level requirement can never be higher than that of the item you are re-skinning. You can dress a rune scimitar as a bronze one, but never a bronze scimitar as a rune one. In practice transmogs only ever hide better gear behind humbler looks, never the reverse, so nobody can use one to bluff about what they are wielding.

That makes the cosmetic helms from treasure trails the natural donors. Top hats, berets, dragon masks, eye patches, chef hats, beanies, headbands, cavalier hats and city hoods all turn up in clue caskets, and almost every one of them carries a level 1 requirement, so it will go onto any helmet you actually fight in. The Robin Hood hat is the odd one out, needing level 20.

Cosmetic overrides

Behind the override button in that same menu sits a second list, the cosmetic overrides. These are pre-made appearances rather than copies of your own gear, and they work differently in the ways that matter. They never consume an item, you buy each one once with orbs, and the unlock sits on your account and follows you across Minescape modes.

Each override belongs to a slot: helmets, shields, or weapons and tools, the last of which covers melee weapons, pickaxes and hatchets. The shelf runs to ice scythes, mauls, shields and hats, ice fiend horns, spider shields, snowflakes, gift boxes, pitchforks, mushroom clubs, reindeer antlers, rip hats and a pair of santa hats. Prices sit between 500 and 1,500 orbs.

Not everything on that list is for sale. Some overrides exist only as rewards: the flaming sword, Nature's Fury and the abyssal pickaxe go to the top finishers of a Leagues season, and various partyhats and holiday hats come out of seasonal events. Those appear in your list once earned. An override that is in use is marked as selected, and clicking it clears it, freeing you to put it on something else at no further cost.

The wardrobe: everything that is not gear

Type /profile to open your cosmetics. It shows your orb and candy balances and one entry per category: skins, hats and masks, titles, pets, balloons, particles and trails, arrow effects, death effects, join messages, sounds, fireworks, emotes, back items, main hand items and off-hand gadgets. Skins and pets are the deepest lists by a wide margin.

Most categories hold one selection at a time. Fireworks are the exception, letting you keep up to five loaded, and setting them off runs a show of about ten seconds with a finale on the end before locking you out for a minute. Emotes and sounds are not worn at all, they are used on demand. Type /emote, or /e, followed by a name to play one, and a looping emote stops the moment you sneak or move.

Masks behave differently here. Rather than replacing your helmet, a mask overlays the helmet you are already wearing, so it only shows while a helmet is equipped, and like transmogs it comes off in PvP. Your pet is despawned there too. You can also flag several favourites within any category that holds a single selection and switch on the random cosmetic toggle, and one of those favourites is picked for you each time you log in.

Where cosmetics come from

The Daily Store trader stands in most towns. Right-click for a rotating selection drawn from every wardrobe category, each entry carrying an orb price and a countdown until the offer expires. Anything you buy is unlocked permanently and on your account, while the cosmetic you currently have selected is remembered per profile, so a main and an ironman can share a wardrobe and still dress differently.

Orbs come from voting, referrals, the season pass and the web store. Candies come from voting, and buy XP lamps and small, medium and big loot chests from the candy shop. Opening a chest hands over a batch of items at once, then locks you out of the next one for one, two or three hours depending on its size. Transmog tokens come out of those chests.

Plenty of cosmetics are never bought at all. Treasure trails pay out cosmetic helms at every clue difficulty, beginner through master. Boss pets are bought with boss pet tokens and then sit in your pet list like any other. Leagues seasons hand out titles, skins, capes and overrides according to your final rank, and seasonal events drop their own hats.
