Exploration is our own skill, not one from the original game. It measures how much of the world you have actually seen. You raise it by finding beacons, wandering into new places, finishing clue scrolls, filling the collection log, catching implings and completing jobs. In return it gates the clue scroll tiers, a handful of locked doors and boss lairs, and the anchors that decide where you respawn and where the home teleport sends you.

How you train it

Level 1 to 120

There is no single grind you can sit on for hours, and that is the design. Beacons are the backbone: 74 of them, 300 XP a touch and double the first time you find one, each on its own four hour cooldown. Around that, clue scrolls pay 250 to 3,500 on completion, every new collection log entry pays 500, every five different places you walk into pays 80, and implings and jobs pay Exploration XP on top of their own skill.

New regions, which Exploration credits you for reaching
New regions, which Exploration credits you for reaching
  1. First beacon sweep 1 to 20

Any beacon you have never touched pays double, 600 XP, which makes the first lap the fastest XP in the skill. Start with Lumbridge, Al-Kharid, Draynor, Port Sarim, Varrock and Falador and pick up beginner clue scrolls as they drop on the way.

  2. Points of interest and jobs 15 to 30

Walking into five different named places in a row pays 80 XP, so a rambling route pays for itself. Take jobs from the job masters standing in most towns, Lumbridge, Varrock, Falador, Draynor, Edgeville, Catherby and Rellekka among them: every task you finish hands back Exploration XP equal to the skill XP you earned doing it.

  3. Easy and medium clues 15 to 40

Easy scrolls open at 15 for 500 XP and medium at 30 for 750. They drop from monsters, from mining and woodcutting, from fishing, from pickpockets and from hunter catches, at a tier scaled to what you were doing.

  4. Implings 17 to 85

Every impling you catch pays its Hunter XP again in Exploration, from 17 for a baby up to 300 for a dragon. The low tiers swarm Misthalin, the middle tiers Asgarnia, Kandarin and Karamja, and the hard tiers the far corners of the map.

  5. Collection log and hard clues 40 to 60

Every first-time entry in the collection log is 500 XP, so boss trips and casket openings quietly pay twice. Hard clues open at 40 for 1,000 XP.

  6. Full beacon laps 60 to 120

Once you have found them all, a complete circuit is worth about 22,700 XP and you can run it again every four hours. The five wilderness beacons pay 400 rather than 300. Elite clues open at 60 for 1,500 XP and master clues at 80 for 3,500.

Anchors

Walk onto an anchor and it offers to become your respawn point, and the destination of your home teleport with it. Only one is ever active at a time. The Lumbridge and Al-Kharid anchors cost 1,000 coins; every other one costs 50,000.

They unlock across the whole level range: Lumbridge and Al-Kharid at 15, Port Sarim at 20, Draynor 30, Falador 35, Taverley 40, Burthorpe 45, then Brimhaven, Catherby, Pollnivneach and Yanille at 50, Varrock 60, Edgeville 65, Ardougne, Rellekka and Seers' Village at 70, Canifis 80 and Prifddinas at 90.

Where the beacons are

They cover the whole map, not just the towns: dungeons, islands, the elf lands, Morytania, the desert and five in the wilderness. Several sit in places you would only reach on a boss trip or a quest, so a beacon lap doubles as a tour of everything the world has.

The five wilderness beacons are the only ones that pay more than the standard rate, and they sit at the Dark Warrior's Fortress, the Mage Arena, the Pirate Hideout, Rogues' Castle and the volcano.

Worth knowing

  • Beacon cooldowns are tracked one beacon at a time, not as a single global timer, so a long circuit is never wasted effort.
  • Master clue scrolls never drop and never come out of a casket. You assemble one by taking an easy, a medium, a hard and an elite scroll to Watson in Burgh de Rott.
  • The compass points at any named place in the world, and the Exploration cape teleports to a beacon, though on a longer cooldown than other skill capes.
  • Locked places check your level as well as the key in your bag: the shed at 20, Taverley's maze and the Evil Chicken lair at 40, the experiment lair at 50 and the Kalphite Queen's lair at 55.
